Night Burning Only 7PM to 7AM

A total fire ban on all open air fires within the boundaries of the Township are put in place or lifted at the sole discretion of the Community Fire Safety Officer should conditions warrant.

During a TOTAL FIRE BAN there is absolutely No Open Air Burning, you may not:

  • Set, maintain or cause to be set or maintained any open air fire Including but not limited to the following:
  • Camp Fires
  •  Fires For Cooking or Warmth
  • Wood, Pellet or Charcoal BBQ/Smoker
  • Outdoor Gas Fire Places/Fire Pits
  • Discharge of Fireworks

Approved propane cooking appliances (BBQ Camp Stoves etc.) may still be used during a fire ban if:

  • The appliance can be easily turned off.
  • The appliance is located on a non-combustible surface.
  • The appliance is in good condition
  • The appliance is use in accordance to the manufactures manual

Fire Bans are advertised at the following:

  • 7 Moose FM Radio Station
  • Carlow & Mayo Waste Sites
  • Carlow & Mayo Community Centres
  • Cunningham’s Country Store
  • On our Municipal Website

Fire Meter signs will point to a TOTAL FIRE BAN, which may be found at the following locations:

  • 66 Mayo Lake Road; entrance to the Mayo Community Centre
  • 3987 Boulter Road; in front of the Municipal Office
  • Hwy 517; near the Renfrew County boarder
  • New Carlow Road; near the Hastings Highlands border
  • Boulter Road; near the Hastings Highlands border

The Township of Carlow/Mayo does not have a Fire Department. The Township does have a Municipal Fire Management Agreement with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry to extinguish grass, brush and forest fires. ALL FIRES MUST BE REPORTED

If you see a Fire Call 9-1-1 for the appropriate authorities to be notified.

  • Burning Guidelines

    Restricted Fire Zone; if the fire hazard becomes extreme, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry may declare a Restricted Fire Zone (RFZ), these announcements will be on your local radio station. When a RFZ is in effect, no open air burning is allowed. This includes camp fires that are not in an approved organized campground.

    Municipalities may prohibit all open air burning before the MNRF implements a RFZ.

    The Forest Fires Prevention Act, stipulates that a responsible person must tend to the fire until it is extinguished and have adequate tools or water to contain the fire. The fire must be at least two metres from any flammable materials.

    Fires for cooking or warmth may be started anytime during the fire season providing:

    • The fire is smaller than .6 meters in diameter.
    • The fire must comply with all conditions in by-law 21-2023
    • The fire must be confined within a fire pit or appliance.
    • The fire must be completely extinguished when cooking is complete.

    Fires for cooking and warmth are not permitted during a total fire ban.

  • Fireworks Guidelines

    Council for the Township of Carlow/Mayo has passed a by-law to Regulate the Safe Handling, Storage, Sale, and Discharge of Fireworks.

    • Discharge of firecrackers, prohibited fireworks and flying lanterns is strictly prohibited.
    • No person shall sell firecrackers, prohibited fireworks or flying lanterns within the township.
    • No person shall discharge fireworks between the hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. between April 1st and October 31st.
    • No person shall discharge fireworks in such a manner as to create a danger or fire hazard to any property.
    • No person shall discharge firework during a Fire Ban.
